MEL’S HOLD’EM POKER - TIP OF THE WEEK

RECORD KEEPING

If you want to win at poker then you must keep accurate detailed records. For some estranged reason most poker players whom are inexperienced do not keep track of their loses, but they remember their wins ever so well.

Every professional player that I know keeps exact records of his or her results (including expenses). They want to see where the best, and worse results are generated and if they can find and identify a reason for the results. In the ring games they generally measure their results expressed in earnings per hour. That is the gage that they strive to improve.

IDEAL CONDITIONS

When looking for a game try to follow the advice below:

  • don’t drink alcohol

  • come well rested and leave if you begin to get tired

  • do not play in a game that is too big for you

  • find a game where there are at least several inexperienced players

  • the rake (or time charge) is at a minimum

  • if you are intimidated by the other players, leave rather than “meet the challenge”

  • generally comfortable physical conditions, i.e., good lighting, air conditioning, comfortable seating and large enough table.

The following question was sent in by Diana. This is probably the most often asked question, and the most difficult to answer

WHEN IS IT TIME TO LEAVE?

There are probably ten good answers to this question and I will give you my opinion:

  • When you feel you are playing poorly and making mistakes
  • When you have lost a pre-determined amount of money
  • When you begin to go on tilt (playing stupid)
  • When you are aggravated enough that your decisions are not as sharp as they should be. You have no room for revenge at the poker table. It can be costly
  • When the game changes from ideal to not ideal. Some of the fish are gone, or have very little money
  • If the conditions are no longer ideal
  • When you use the “stop loss rule”. This rule is usually sound and I know a lot of players that use it.
  • If playing in a ten/twenty game and you find yourself up $600 the rule goes as follows: If you give back a small part of that, say $100, pick up your chips and leave a winner. Hard to argue with.
Thanks Diane, that was an important question.
